A380 KINGKERSWELL BY-PASS

The A380 at Kingkerswell is finally being by-passed to the relief of local residents. The 80m scheme commenced in the summer of 2013 and is being constructed by a Galliford Try – SIAC Joint Venture. In April of this year Kemp were appointed by the JV contractors to review the earthworks quantities and carry out interim measures on the 750,000 Cu m muck shift. Original ground and design models have been constructed by Kemp for comparison. The 5km site was surveyed in a single day with a UAV (drone) in what is believed to be the first use of such techniques in the south west on a scheme of this size. The data collected was processed into a 3d model with photogrametric techniques. The resulting model was compared with the design and original models using complex prisms to establish accurate volumes to match the contractors mass haul schedule. The surveys are on going throughout the crucial second summer of the project which is due for completion in December 2015.
